Someone recently sent me an email asking me whether any fruit basket was suitable to send their Jewish friend, since they were assuming it fell in the acceptable range of kosher dietary law since it was fruit. They wanted to know if there was a difference between giving kosher fruit baskets compared to others.

All fruits are kosher, but have to be inspected for bugs, which are not kosher. And every type of fruit is allowed but does not fall under Jewish dietary law when the fruit is prepared with utensils used for food that is not allowable, like meat. All fruit should be inspected to be sure they contain no bugs. Strawberries and raspberries tend to be a problem when it comes to bug infestation.

There are restrictions on products made from grapes that come from Jewish laws prohibiting using products of idolatry. Because it was used in rituals of early religions, wine was routinely sanctified for pagan uses while it was being processed. So because of this, observant Jews are not allowed to use wine or any grape products made by non-Jews, strictly speaking. Whole grapes do not fall into this restriction. You can see this applies to wine and grape juice or grape juice sweetened products almost exclusively. Just be aware of the origin of the grape product and you will not go wrong with giving the appropriate gift to your Jewish friends or co-workers. Beer used to be considered kosher, but now that beers made with fruit have become so popular, don’t expect that to be the assumption.

If you want to lose weight faster, you should know what drinks and fluids are good for losing weight. Here is our top choice:

Water. Water is always the number one recommendation. You will burn an extra 200 calories a day by drinking 2 l of cold water. A study conducted by Michael Boschman, MD on 14 healthy men and women found that following the consumption of a 17 oz glass of water, metabolic rates temporarily increased by 30% within 10-40 minutes. Also, drinking water with a meal may make you feel full sooner and therefore satisfied eating less. However, for best results it is good to combine water with some fibers. Adequate water consumption really provides the foundation for any good weight loss program.

Milk. Drinking fat-free milk for breakfast, can help cut calories at lunchtime and contribute to overall weight loss. Milk may be the beverage of choice for anyone trying to cut calories and lose weight. Milk is a good source of calcium, a mineral that may help us lose weight. Calcium can boost weight loss by increasing fat breakdown in fat cells.

Vegetable Juice. Juices are effective way to lose weight, gain energy, and detoxify the body from the harmful effects of toxins. If you drink at least one glass of low sodium vegetable juice every day , you can cut on your calorie intake . By some studies you will eat 135 calories less than usual. The fruit nectar juice keeps you full and that will help you to lose weight. Also, people who drinking juice were more likely to get the recommended 3 to 5 servings of vegetables daily and to have higher levels of vitamin C and potassium. Researchers point out vegetable consumption helps suppress appetite too.

Green Tea. It is well known that the benefits of green tea are many. Numerous scientific studies has shown that green tea have weight loss benefits. Green tea acts as a metabolic stimulant. When metabolism speed up, the rate at which calories are burned also speeds up. With green tea , you can burn around 80 calories per day more than usual.

Can the Big Ten do it again? BetRepublic looks at Tuesday night’s Orange Bowl, as another Big Ten team tries to join two of their conference members with big wins.

The No. 13 Penn State Nittany Lions defeated the No. 12 LSU Tigers by a final of 19-17 and covered as 1-point underdogs in the process.

Penn State head coach Joe Paterno added to his NCAA record, winning his 24th career bowl victory.

The No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the No. 7 Oregon Ducks 26-17 on the strength of QB Terrelle Pryor’s performance covering as 5-point underdogs.

Now the No. 10 Iowa Hawkeyes follow suit and win straight up and against the spread in their Tuesday FedEx Orange Bowl matchup against the No. 9 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets?

The sports betting TV show, live every day at 3:00 PM ET at BetRepublic.com, will completely preview this big matchup.

The Hawkeyes as 5.5-point underdogs for that game with the Total set at 50.5.

The Yellow Jackets are favored by a field goal in the first half and the first half Total is set at 25.5.

Online sportsbooks are reporting that Georgia Tech has received 70% of the betting volume so far.

According to STATS LLC, Georgia Tech is playing in its first major bowl game since 1967.

The last time Iowa played in a BCS bowl game was in 2003 when they were defeated 38-17 by the USC Trojans in the Orange Bowl and they were 4.5-point underdogs.

Iowa is a very respectable 8-3 ATS this season and 13-6 ATS in its last 19 games with a posted line.

Georgia Tech has been very good down the stretch, going 8-2 ATS in its last 10 games overall.

In the Jackets’ last eight games when favored by 6-points or less, they are 6-2 ATS and in the Hawkeyes’ last 14 games when an underdog of 6-points or less, they are 11-3 ATS.

There are game-related proposition bets for the game as well.

Georgia Tech is listed at -135 to score first while Iowa is listed at +105.

If the first score of the game is a TD, wagers will pay out at -220 and if it is a field goal or a safety, it will do so at +170.

The bowl season is at an end with a few meaningless bowl games and even less BCS bowls remaining.

After the lights go out on Georgia Tech and Iowa, all eyes focus on the national championship between No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Texas on Thursday.

Enjoy the rest of the bowl games and your week.

Visit BetRepublic for their Orange Bowl picks and BCS Championship picks.

A question from a reader: Rivals.com 2008 Preseason Top 25: Jan. 8
1. USC (11-2)
Putting USC at the top is a safe pick because the Trojans annually win their conference, earn a BCS bid and play their best at the end of the season.
2. Georgia (11-2)
Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno will give the Bulldogs one of the nation’s top quarterback/tailback duos.
3. Ohio State (11-2)
The Buckeyes’ title hopes could depend on whether potential first-round picks Vernon Gholston, James Laurinaitis and Malcolm Jenkins stay in school.
4. Oklahoma (11-3)
Quarterback Sam Bradford will try to build on his outstanding freshman campaign while leading a team that could return as many as 17 starters.
5. Missouri (12-2)
The Tigers should return three 2007 Rivals.com All-America selections in quarterback Chase Daniel, wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and free safety William Moore.
6. Florida (9-4)
You know that offense will rack up some points, but the Gators’ defense must get a whole lot better.
7. West Virginia (11-2)
The Mountaineers hope the expected returns of Pat White, Steve Slaton and Noel Devine on offense will compensate for heavy graduation losses on defense.
8. LSU (12-2)
The Tigers lose tons of talent on both sides of the ball, but they have plenty of former four- and five-star prospects ready to replace them.
9. Auburn (9-4)
Auburn’s biggest losses are on the sideline, as they must adjust to a new offense and find a replacement for departed defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.
10. Clemson (9-4)
With so much talent back on offense and defense, the Tigers can’t come up short in a big situation again. Can they?
11. Kansas (12-1)
The Jayhawks could be even stronger than they were this season. They’ll need to be better now that they no longer avoid Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech.
12. BYU (11-2)
If the Cougars beat Washington and UCLA in September, they might not lose all season.
13. Virginia Tech (11-3)
The Hokies’ hopes of contending for anything beyond an ACC title rest on whether cornerbacks Brandon Flowers and Victor Harris return to school.
14. Texas (10-3)
The Longhorns are banking on Will Muschamp’s arrival to boost a defense that struggled up until its bowl game this season.
15. Wisconsin (9-4)
The Badgers have a big question mark at quarterback, but they look solid just about everywhere else.
16. Illinois (9-4)
Rashard Mendenhall’s decision to enter the NFL Draft will make it tougher for the Illini to prove they’re not just a one-season wonder.
17. Texas Tech (9-4)
The Harrell-to-Crabtree combination will give Big 12 defensive coordinators plenty of sleepless nights next season.
18. Oregon (9-4)
The Sun Bowl proved how dangerous this team can be if it gets consistency from its quarterback, but the Ducks must go on the road to face USC, California, Arizona State and Oregon State.
19. Arizona State (10-3)
Rudy Carpenter returns to work behind a retooled line that has to do a better job of protecting him.
20. Penn State (9-4)
The last time Penn State had a quarterback as run-oriented as Daryll Clark, Michael Robinson led the Nittany Lions to an Orange Bowl title.
21. Tennessee (10-4)
Uncertainty at quarterback and offensive coordinator prevents us from ranking the Vols any higher.
22. USF (9-4)
The offense should be better than this season’s, but the Bulls will have a tough time replacing cornerbacks Mike Jenkins and Trae Williams.
23. Michigan (9-4)
The Wolverines could have some growing pains as they adjust to new coach Rich Rodriguez and his spread offense.
24. South Carolina (6-6)
This is a leap of faith considering how the Gamecocks ended 2007, but we’re guessing South Carolina should have one of the nation’s most improved teams.
25. Wake Forest (9-4)
Jim Grobe’s decision not to go to Arkansas assures that Wake Forest once again will have the coaching edge in just about every game it plays next fall.

BCS Bowl Trends – 2010 BCS Bowl New Year Games at Online Betting: Alright! We’re into the meat of college football’s bowl schedule.

The NCAA will ring off 2010 with two BCS bowl games on New Year’s Day.

The No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes will battle it out with the No. 7 Oregon Ducks in the Rose Bowl at Pasadena and the No. 3 Cincinnati Bearcats will go head to head with the No. 5 Florida Gators in the Sugar Bowl under the Superdome in Louisiana.

In “The Granddaddy of Them All,” online sportsbooks have the Ohio State Buckeyes as 5-point underdogs with a Total set at 50.5.

OSU fans are only too aware of this, but for everyone else we need to note that the Buckeyes haven’t won a bowl game in the past three seasons, going 0-3 straight up.

Ohio State could have trouble ending the three-bowl game losing streak though as starting QB Terrelle Pryor is banged up.

According to a Dec. 30 report from the Los Angeles Times, Pryor is suffering from a partially torn ligament in his left knee and it is still bothering him despite the fact the team hasn’t seen action in about a month and a half.

Still, the Buckeyes have been hot in their past 20 games overall, going 15-5 against the spread, cashing in very nicely for their backers. Also worth noting is that in their last 11 games against Pac-10 opposition, they’ve been a very profitable 9-2 ATS.

Looking at the Total, in Ohio State’s last seven games in January, the Over has prevailed five times. Oregon has a record of 8 Overs and 2 Unders in their last 10 games overall, including six straight Overs.

In the Ducks’ last nine games when favored by 6-points or less, they are 6-3 ATS.

SPORTSBETTING.com is reporting pretty balanced action on this matchup, with 56% favoring Oregon so far.

Sugar Bowl
Florida had its sights set on defending its BCS title the week after New Years but lost to Alabama in the SEC title game and had to settle for the Sugar Bowl against Cincy instead.

The Gators are big 13-point Sugar Bowl favorites but things aren’t rosy for the boys from the Swamp.

It was revealed recently that head coach Urban Meyer, the man who lead the program to national titles in the 2006 and 2008 seasons, will be taking an indefinite leave of absence from the team after the Jan. 1 bowl game.

Meyer was said to be suffering chest pains after the team’s SEC championship loss, resulting in the announcement. Bettors are going to have to factor in the “win one for the Meyer-meister approach” going into the bowl game against Cincinnati.

The Bearcats also had a coaching loss to deal with, although under entirely different circumstances. Bearcats head coach Brian Kelly left Cincinnati for Notre Dame earlier in December — offensive coordinator Jeff Quinn will coach the team in the Sugar Bowl.

Unlike Florida, Cincinnati will be looking to win in order to spite deserter Kelly.

The Total for the Sugar Bowl is set at 57. In the Gators’ last seven games in the month of January, they have produced 6 Overs and 1 Under.

In Cincinnati’s last 15 games when listed as an underdog of any line range, they are 12-3 ATS.

Enjoy all the bowl games on New Year’s Eve day and of course, on New Year’s Day.

Check all the BCS Bowl Trends and BCS Bowl odds at Online Betting.

Happy New Year.
