Is Tim Tebow the most overrated college football player in history?

A question from a reader: All anyone wants to talk about is how great Tim Tebow is. But “the greatest college football player in history” PROBABLY won’t even go in the first round in the draft. How does that work?

yes in my opinion, he is. i dont think its possible to watch a show about college football or a game without hearing his name, usually several times. I’ll be glad when he’s gone, and not because he’s that good, i’m just tired of hearing about him

  2. Probably not in history, but maybe the most overrated in the NCAA today.

College football has absolutely nothing to do with the NFL or how a player is projected to do in the NFL or where they are drafted. Otherwise the majority of great college players would be erased from history and there would be no college football or no history. It’s a fact that only about 8 or 9 Heisman Trophy Winners are in the NFL Hall of Fame and most great players in college don’t make it to the NFL Hall of Fame either. Tim Tebow, while I really don’t like the guy and I don’t think he’ll do much in the NFL especially at quarterback I would take him on my college team and you would too.

  4. No not in history I’ve seen players win the Heisman and go unheard in the NFL. But he is overrated

    How you finish

look at where his stats rank among the all time best in college football. they are up there and he has 2 championships and has been to the Heisman ceremony 3 times. even though he wasn’t the starting QB his 1st champ but he still played a roll in the offense. he is one of the best college football players ever. but his skills are not meant for the speed of the NFL defenses so he will not be a high draft pick.

No one’s saying he’s going to be the greatest NFL player so whatever round he’s taken in has little relevance to whether he’s “the greatest college football player in history” or not.

You must be quite knowledgeable about what what makes a QB good or not. Maybe you should apply for a job with the NFL since the teams don’t seem to be so great in that area.

  10. I had always thought that it was Doug Flutie, but perhaps Tebow is surpassing him in overratedness.

  11. How many past players can you think of that has won 2 National Championships, and at least one Heisman Trophy. Nobody I can think of at least in the modern era.

Tebow is a winner, if it wasn’t for Tebow in last year’s SEC championship game Alabama would have won it by 2 TD’s .

Their are a lot of Heisman Trophy winners who didn’t get drafted in the 1st round. So what ! , What;s your point.? Tebow gives 100% on every play and showed class by congratulating Alabama on their victory. In contrast to the days when Miami (Florida) had their cut throat signs , dancing on top of a fallen opponent. and the constant trash talking . I’ll take a player like Tebow any day of the week.

If for some reason he doesn’t make it in the pro’s , Mr Tebow will succeed in life. . This coming from a life long ‘Bama’ fan.

  12. r u crazy as one of the most winning qb’s in his college carrer, not to mention he has always been in the running for the heisman.

    C’MON MAN

  13. Not even close. Ever hear of Ryan Leaf or Eric Crouch. Everyone thought Indy screwed up drafting Payton Manning over Ryan Leaf. Tim Tebow may be overrated, but not the most in history.

  14. What does winning a Heisman Trophy have to with being a potential first round NFL draft pick? absolutely nothing. Winning a Heisman Trophy also does not guarantee NFL success. Look at some of the past Heisman Trophy winners that did not have have NFL success (i.e. Archie Griffin, Rashaan Salam, Gino Toretta, Danny Wuerffel, Chris Weinke among many others)

I believe yes and no. I believe they hyped him as a Superman and he fell on his face and cried this past Saturday. But i also believe he is a gifted QB that can both run and pass so he will catch on with a team and probably have a decent NFL career.

  16. He’s certainly not the greatest ever, but he’s not the most overrated in history either.

no he’s not. he’s never been praised for being a great player. he’s accomplishments come from being an outstanding team leader. He’ll not be a QB in the NFL but he can be an asset for any team.

Yeah pretty much. He is good, and has a lot of heart for the game, but his team makes him look so good it’s not even funny. He broke Walker’s rushing TD record, but it was easy for him to. The only reason his stats look so good is because he’s the only one that ever gets the ball inside the 5.

  19. Tim Tebow is great, but greatest player in history im not sure about that one. College and the NFL are totally different worlds. Tebow can get by with all of that running and stuff he does in college. Chances are, Tebow will not even get close to the 20+ rushing touchdowns he gets in college, in the NFL. Two different worlds. For what it’s worth Tebow can certainly run with the ball, however he lacks the passing ability to make it at the next level. Mel Kiper has predicted he can make it in the NFL in the third or fourth round as a fullback, not a quarterback. But everyone knows some horrible team like Oakland, or Cleveland or Buffalo will take a chance on him and blow a first round pick on this guy.

  20. Yes most overrated is true! He wont get drafted at all. He is a horrible QB. If it werent for the system then he wouldnt be starting in college. Also if he played in a tougher conference then he would have 0 national championships . The SEC is the most overrated conference.

  21. There are differences between being a great college player and a good NFL prospect. They are two different games played at two different levels. Many successful college quarterbacks couldn’t make it in the NFL due to less than ideal arm strength, which is exactly Tebow’s issue. This is how that works.

EDIT #1 – I disagree STRONGLY with sbosse that the SEC is overrated. It is clearly the strongest conference in college football. If you think it is overrated, tell me what conference is better?

By far. He wont do anything in the NFL

    Tim (not tebow)

Absolutely not! In fact, he should give Percy Harvin his Heisman. Probably the most over rated player in recent college history, he has not won a big game against a top ten team since Harvin and Murphy left. His numbers are very pedestrian against REAL teams (not the Div. II teams he played) this year. He was outplayed by Alabama’s QB in the only game that counted this season, and has been the beneficiary of being in a great system. If he had gone to Kentucky, or Duke, would he even be in the Heisman running? Absolutely not. Most wouldn’t have ever heard of him.
