Why does everyone think Brian Urlacher is so good?

A question from a reader: Everyone is ranting and raving about Brian Urlacher and I am tired of it. I have watched him play and all I ever see is him getting run over or juked out or something else like that. And please, nobody tell me, oh hes never been run over! Or hes never been juked out! Because there is a very nice clip of him getting run over by the Bus when there were already two guys tackling the bus and he was in perfect tackling position, still managed to get run over. And he got juked out by Tom Brady, not even a scrambling quarterback, a slow quarterback. And dont say those are the only times because if you get juked out by a quarterback, a running back must make you miss everytime, and it seems like everytime I see him trying to tackle a stronger back he is going the wrong way, backwards. So tell me, fans of Urlacher, what makes him so great? Or do you agree with me that he is not that good at all, that it is the team that surrounds him and the fact that he plays in the NFC, JV if you will.

I am not an Urlacher fan but dude is that good. You don’t see many linebackers run down Michael Vick. He is not going to make every tackle like you mentioned above but he is always around the ball and he makes big plays in crucial situations. I am a Falscons fan through and through and I was skeptical of his skills until I got to watch him play more these last two years. If you want to talk about overrated, the better question would be regarding Keith Brooking.

Of course Urlacher is good. he tackles as good as anybody in the league and does get juked out occasionaly, but who doesn’t?? Try watching some of his highlights an you’ll see

unless your forgetting someone has to get that d in order it’s not that he is the best lb in the league or he’s superman it’s that he is one of the smartest he is the captain and the spirit of that defense who do you think reads the offense and tells his players where to line up and what to expect?
the coaches? well ron is a great d coach, but someone has to be the eyes out on that field and that is urlacher. go back and watch those clips of yours again and look to see whose calling the shots out on the field the captain. like i said he aint no superman and niether is brady but he leads that defense like brady does his offense and that is why he’s great. he is a leader and people follow him he’s smart and knows what he’s doing. wait till they have to play without him or someone out smarts him and see how that top ranking defense fails. the same skills as brady. brady ain’t the greatest qb in my opinion but he is one of the smartest and a great leader also.

Wait until this years prospects,there is a lot of talent to be seen.Rookies and people coming out to prove their point are the ones to make us forget the mighty Urlacher.(can anyone say injury?)

Having a few bad plays like you mentioned dosen’t make you a bad player. He’s a top 5-10 LB in the NFL. Did you see the game against Arizona? he dominated that game I don’t think he’s the best LB but you don’t go to the Pro bowl being a bad one.

Hes an all around linebacker, those are two plays you mentioned, but he can drop back into coverage, and is a MONSTER on the field. I see your a ray lewis fan by your iconn, I will give you Ray Lewis is a better LB, but Urlacher is right behind him. Hes strong, he CAN tackle, its just well, LOOK AT THE BUS. Hes one of the hardest runningbacks to tackle. Hes giant. There a clip of the bus dragging 4 people against the bengals, how do you expect Brian Urlacher to take him by himself.

Because Brian Urlacher is the Bears defense. If its not Urlacher, than who is it? Briggs? ( the LB that Urlacher made look good) He’s the face of that franchise. Yea he got juked by Tom Brady, but everybody gets juked at one time. Plus, what proves that Urlacher is that whole team is that he had a season long injury in 04 and the Bears would go on to have a 5-11 season. Next season, he would lead that team to 11-5 ( I almost can’t beleive I’m saying this, but I wished Grossman was healthy and we could’ve gone 13-3 or we at least had Greise). I also agree with DaClint ( sorry if I disn’t spell it right ) that your man Ray Lewis is good too. Plus, that strip that was returned 40 yd’s for a td is what gave the team more hope ( they had gotten some confidence from the previous fumble that was also returned for a td), plus that’s what fired the “Windy City Flyer” as well probably

Because he is good. He played safety in High School so he brings the pass-covering ability to the Middle Linebacker position. In his beginning seasons, he was the first LB to become a threat at both the run and pass. And as many people say, he is fast. It’s true, he can stare down and just take out Michael Vick with no problem. And he’s an inspiration. He led the team huddle talks that got Chicago the Victory in Arizona. And he stipped the ball from Edgerin James (who used to never fumble). So yeah, he’s good. Some say he will go into the Hall of Fame his first year. That’s L.T. and Junior Seau good. But don’t worry, your boy Ray Lewis might get into the HoF, someday.

i dont believe he’s overrated because he’s somewhat underrated and keep in mind without urlacher in that bears defense that defense would be nothin like ray lewis for example; when ray is there the defense is strong but when he’s gone their not strong. And hey urlacher has also been to about 6 or 7 probowls including this year, so is he good? Yes he is. And there’s one thing that i like about him is that he don’t yell a lot which is good because yelling is one thing but doing something is another. Because you see players be yelling and screaming like banshees and all, but when it comes to winning only the few wins.

Um, because he is good. He’s a hell of a player. Urlacher is the star of the Bears defense. The guy is good, plain and simple. So, he’s had a few bad plays in his career. What’s the big deal, everybody’s had bad plays, it’s part of the game, it happens. And if all you’ve ever seen is Urlacher not playing well, then you obviously don’t watch him enough.

first of all it started right there in the windy city….. they thought they had a gold mine so they ramped and raved about him and then the league got in it and alot of people started watching him and now buddy u better watch out cause if he makes a play everyone watching sunday football is going to hear about it

If you look at all the negative things in football, then I guess you’re better off staring at a blank screen. Urlacher emerged as the Bears’ Defense leader after Brown went down with an injury. He’s pulled the team out of some though situations, like when he stripped the ball out of Edgerrin James’ hands, prevented the Jets from scoring, and myriad other scenarios. Sure, he led the lack-luster NFC in tackles and interceptions (tied), but he has that intangible that’s characterized when he’s reading an offensive scheme, and trying to call an audible. Before Lovie even came to Chicago, Urlacher did his best to carry the team amidst a batch of mediocrity.
Also, in the entire history of the NFL, there has never been a single player who performed perfectly every time they touched the ball in any given game. Yes, Urlacher has gotten juked out before, but who has not? Ray Lewis? Derrick Brooks? Lofa Tatupu? Forget a few bad games, and look at whole picture.

Save that JV crap. I won’t say that Urlacher is not a good player but I do say he’s just a bit overrated. I don’t like the fact he’s made the pro bowl the last couple of years on reputation when there were other players in the NFC who could have easily have been chosen.

Check his stats. He is the Bears lending tackler, defends passes down field, creates turnovers. team leader NFC or not the guy can play.

Dude hate him or not. every player out there gets burned a time or two, no matter who they are. The reason he is good is becasue he can drop back and cover the underneth pass in the middle or can bull rush. he has the speed to run down TE’s and is an all around good player. he can stop running backs too.

The guy has quickness, and speed, He has become a presence on the field, to the point of teams altering their offensive schemes because of him.
In 7 years he has missed 7 games in 04 due to an injury.
He has amassed a total of 638 solo tackles, 32.5 sacks, 10 interceptions 8 forced fumbles and 45 passes defended.
The fact that he was on a Bears team that was not very good for a few years , but he still showed a ton of heart by playing his ass off, is another good quality, unlike Randy Moss who was a straight up quitter when things weren’t going his way .
Those misses you talk about happen to defensive guys, its just the way football is , some times they over pursue, take a bad angle or misread a play, that happens to even Ray Lewis , it happened to Lawrence Taylor.
The fact is he is a force on the football field to be reckoned with , he gives his all on every down. I think a lot of teams would like him or someone like him playing for them.

Urlacher is a first ballot hall of famer hands down, alot of people like to call him overrated or what not but they are just hating on the man. He is all over the field making plays. He can play stride for stride with Reggie Bush, he shut down Reggie pretty much in the NFC C game.
The Brady juke on Urlacher is overrated, I think Urlacher was going for the home run and wanted to lay him out and Urlacher under estimated Brady, thats why Brady made that play. But say what you want about Urlacher he will be in the HOF without a doubt.

As me being a vikings fan its hard to admit this but the guy is good and he is worth the rant about him every time the vikings play him hes always around the ball hes just not a tackler he can defend very well for a line backer i give him props he is a pure athlete

OK, Imagine this………the speed of a Corner, the body of a Middle Linebacker, the mentality of Dick Butkus, and the intelligence of a Peyton Manning- esque at his postion. Thats Brian Urlacher. The man has consistenly topped over 120 tackles every year hes been in the league. The dude’s been to like, 5 pro bowls (even if he didnt deserve them), and hes been Defensive Player of the Year! So for short, thats why Urlacher is so damn good.
P.S.: This dude gave Ron Mexico (aka Michael Vick) hell. Thats not easy to do…name me 10 other players that can do that…

But everyone thought Butkas was all that, too.
Both get alot of credit but both are good, not great linebackers.
Urlacher is a better cover LB than run, Again just good, not great.
